Friday 11th July

This week, our main highlight was Create Day on Tuesday, which saw us taking part in live lessons all day and sharing our learning with the Royal Opera and Ballet. It was amazing to see the weeks of preparation and practise "come together" for the final performance. The children put in so much effort and should be proud. When we performed the final dance and song, it looked so effective with the whole year group moving together. This week we finished writing our new chapter for The Firework-maker's Daughter, including fronted adverbials and descriptive language. In History, we explored ancient Greek gods and created Top Trumps about them.

Friday 4th July

The children absolutely loved the Time Walk last week and enjoyed making the decorations for the Year 4 80s station. This week, we have been busy with all things Greek! Our Greek Day on Monday was a great success. We learnt about ancient Greek writing and traditional Greek dance, and tried some new and exciting foods. It was great to see the children try new things and surprise themselves at what they liked. On Tuesday we had our class assembly. The children worked so hard on learning lines and performing the Greek dance and should be proud of themselves. Thank you to all those parents and family who managed to join us for the assembly. We have been finishing off our class reader ready to write our new chapter next week. In Maths, we started our new unit on statistics.

This week has been a busy one! The children used drama in English to help them understand some of the characters in The Firework-makers' Daughter and inspire their ideas for a new chapter which they will write next week. Everyone was very focused during our Maths test on Monday, and we also finished off our learning on shape. In Science, we explored viscosity and compared the thickness of different liquids. The class loved carrying out the practical experiment. During PE, the students enjoyed developing their athletic skills further.

This week, we used our new class reader, The Firework-maker's Daughter, as inspiration for a short letter and recounted how the Ceremony of the Full Moon was carried out. In Maths, we have looked at different types of shapes and their properties. Science was very engaging as we observed how animal faeces can help scientists learn about animals and their habitats. The children loved our Sports Week activities and did amazingly at their races and activities for Sports Day. We also did some more preparation for Create Day, performing more dance and exploring migration.

We have had a lovely week of learning and lots of nice events. On Monday, we had an assembly where we learnt lots about Greenpeace and the important work it does. The class loved turning this into posters and were so creative with their designs. We have also been completing a few tasks to prepare ourselves for Create Day next month. We have been doing dance sessions and introduced the UN Convention on the rights of the child. It has been interesting and we look forward to learning the rest. In Maths, we moved onto angles and types of triangles. In English, we finished our persuasive letters which were great! In History, we looked at different Greek architecture and designed our own temples. We also finished painting our Greek pots which were fantastic!

What a wonderful first week back! We have started looking at persuasive adverts and the children have created their own products worthy of the immortal gods in our class reader, ‘Who Let the Gods Out’. They have really got the hang of rhetorical questions and make the reader feel like they are missing out. In Maths, we have been finishing our learning on time and look forward to our next topic next week. In Science, we explored the relationship between the shape and type of teeth in animal skulls and whether the animal is a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. In History, we compared the ancient Athenian and Spartan schools and explored what life was like for children in ancient Greece.

Friday 23rd May

What a wonderful week of learning! We had cricket with our coach on Monday and Friday afternoon which was a lovely way to spend our last week before half-term. We learnt so much and everyone had such fun during the sessions. The children have also really enjoyed our class reader and love the comedic parts. We have completed our care guides on how to look after a Cerberus, which is a creature from ancient Greek mythology. The children came up with lots of creative ideas for feeding, housing and looking after the health of the beast. We also revisited how to draw self-portraits in preparation for our end-of-year reports. The children's drawing and sketching skills have really come along this year!

Friday 16th May

This week we completed watercolour paintings for VE Day, which we started last week. In English, we have started reading ‘Who Let the Gods Out’, which links with our topic of Ancient Greece. The children were very engaged and loved the funny, adventurous plot. We have read aloud as a class and will be using the book to inspire some writing. In Science, we learnt about the different types of teeth and came up with actions to help us remember them.

Friday 9th May

The children have all been very engaged in the topic of Ancient Greece and developed their understanding of chronology as they placed key events of the period onto a timeline.  We also began looking at the significance of Alexander the Great.  The children progressed from dividing two-digit numbers to dividing 3-digit numbers with great success, and we completed our unit on money. In Art, we began learning about the origins of Greek pottery and what the functions of different designs were. We look forward to writing the end of our own myths so we can edit our draft and write our best version in our Big Write books. 4 Jackson continues to enjoy their cricket sessions and their catching and batting skills are showing much improvement.

Friday 2nd May

This week the children have loved our Greek myths topic in English. They learnt the story of Perseus and Medusa, created their own mythical beasts as a group and then designed their individual creatures ready to plan their own myths. In Maths, we have been dividing 2-digit numbers, estimating with money and solving problems with money. The children found dividing a little bit tricky but persevered and really did themselves proud. We started our new topic of digestion in Science and the class were very excited learning about how clever the human body is! We have also been developing our cricket skills.
