5 Shakespeare

Friday 17th October

This week, the children have been learning more about Curiosity's journey into space and were tasked to write a short report in order to practise using their formal language skills. Then we moved on to designing our very own Rovers, deciding what gadgets and technology they would need to have to survive ready to be used to write our own explanation texts next week. In Maths, we have been identifying and writing equivalent fractions of given fractions (unit and non-unit). In Computing, we looked at how searches can be influenced and the limitations of search engines, learning how to search more effectively.

Over the last week, our space theme has continued! We took part in a live online interactive space event which featured the famous Tim Peake himself and his incredible experiences and stories. In Art, we practised using chalk to create different marks and colour combinations for intended effects, ready to transfer these skills to the planets in our artwork. We have also started our new English focus, which is about explanation texts. We are reading the fascinating book called 'Curiosity – The Story of a Mars Rover' by Markus Motum. The children have been busy researching facts about Mars and learning all about the Rover with its special features.

Friday 3rd October

This week the class have been travelling through space writing space logs describing their newly discovered planet. The figurative language and vocabulary have been amazing. In Science, we learnt about how day and night and seasons change due to the Earth's orbit of the sun. In Art, we have started to create our space art masterpieces inspired by Peter Thorpe. The children have used sponges to apply the primary colour paints to their backgrounds on A3 black sugar paper to produce a textured effect.

Friday 26th September

This week 5 Shakespeare have been very creative. In English, the class have been busy writing descriptive sentences. They have thought carefully about using precise vocabulary, figurative language and vivid sensory details. In Science, the class have been learning about the phases of the moon, and they carried out research about which other planets have moons.

Friday 19th September

This week we have continued with the book 'The Man Who Walked Between the Towers' by Mordicai Gerstein. The class have been busy being journalists creating headlines and writing their newspaper reports. In Maths, we have continued with place value, increasing and decreasing numbers by adding 100, 1,000 and 10,000. Then, in Computing, children have been exploring the role of computer systems in our lives. They took part in an activity where they imagined they were running a catalogue store and needed to sort the steps into the correct order.

Friday 12th September

Since returning to school, we have been studying the book 'The man who walked between the towers' by Mordicai Gerstein, which is about the famous event where Philippe Petit walked between the Twin Towers in New York on a tightrope in 1974. The children had a go at imagining what this would feel like and what they would have been thinking by having a go at balancing across a 'wire' themselves to generate powerful vocabulary to use in their writing.

Friday 18th July

This week we have been completing a fun maths project to practise calculating area and perimeter. The children had to design a tiny house, deciding which furniture, decor and appliances they would like and place them within their floor and wall plans. The next step will be turning their plans into a 3D model.

Friday 11th July

Create Day finally came! We explored the rights of the child through dancing and singing. It was fun to express ourselves together. We also created some wonderful Create Day pictures to remind us all of our rights and send out messages of hope to all.

Friday 4th July

The Time Walk was an excellent event where the children could hear and read about music throughout time. So many of the songs they knew and would either dance or sing-a-long to. Our class focus was the 70s and the children thoroughly got involved in the events, fashion and music of that era, showing their enthusiasm through dressing up, researching events and creating a music playlist. A fantastic fun day.

Friday 27th June

Over the last few weeks, we have been preparing for Create day on 8th July. We are exploring the Rights of the Child through learning the song ‘The Hope’ along with the National Royal Opera and Ballet. We have already had two previous sessions of dance, exploring the right to play and the right to their own identity. We then explored the use of props and how these can inform our performance.  This week we began to learn the song ‘The Hope’ by Ayanna Witter-Johnson, learning the first verse and chorus, and adding actions to convey meaning.

Friday 13th June

The children had a fantastic trip this week to West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village. They had the chance to explore reconstructions of buildings, handle replica objects and study archaeological findings from the site to consolidate their understanding further on what life would have been like as an Anglo-Saxon.

Friday 6th June

This week in Maths, the children have been studying symmetry. They began by identifying the differences between a mirror image and its original form. They then recalled what symmetry was and began to look at vertical, horizontal and diagonal reflections. They even began to draw a mirror image of a half-drawn shape to create some beautiful artwork as you can see below.

Friday 23rd May

This week, the class took part in a Road Safety Session run by Essex Highways. The children took part in discussions surrounding how to be safe when walking and how to cross the road safely, followed by practical roadside training. We also created posters to promote road safety and a rap which the children are very proud of.

In our Maths lesson on Wednesday, we were learning how to read and plot coordinates. We highlighted the importance of reading the x-axis first before the y-axis so that we write down the coordinates correctly. To consolidate our knowledge and understanding, we played the classic game of battleships to practise plotting coordinates accurately in order to sink our opponents' ships. The children had lots of fun and were very competitive!

Friday 9th May

During Science, we have been learning about the life cycle of a plant and each stage of the reproductive process. We dissected different flowers to observe their parts in detail using a magnifying glass and compared the equivalent parts in the flowers. It was really fascinating to see the similarities and differences!

Friday 2nd May

This term in Art we are studying landscapes. We looked into the work of Alfred Heaton-Cooper in the first week, studying the techniques he used. This week we produced perspective in our art, considering the use of a vanishing point – the point at which two lines appear to merge together.  This is as far as the eye can see clearly, therefore creating the idea of distance. The children followed the instructions beautifully and the results were fantastic.
