5 Rauf

Friday 17 October

In English this week, we continued reading the book Curiosity and used it as inspiration to design our own Mars Rovers. We added detailed labels using expanded noun phrases and causal conjunctions to explain how our Rovers would work. In Science, we found out why we have seasons. We discovered it’s not because the Earth moves closer or further away from the Sun, but because the Earth is tiltedIn Maths meetings, we’ve been working hard on our times tables recall and enjoyed taking part in a Times Tables Rock Stars battle against Shakespeare ClassIt’s been another great week of learning, teamwork, and creativity in 5 Rauf.

Friday 10 October

This week, 5 Rauf enjoyed taking part in a STEM Learning Live Lesson with Tim Peake, where we learnt all about life in space on the International Space Station. During the live lesson, the children took part in many interactive activities, including a science experiment about dehydration and an exercise challenge. We discovered that astronauts have to exercise for two and a half hours every day while in space to stay healthy!

We have carried our space learning into English, where we have been exploring the book Curiosity, all about the Mars Rover. Using the book, we created labels for a diagram using causal conjunctions to add extra detail. We have also been learning to write with increased cohesion and use these skills to describe Curiosity’s launch into space.

Friday 3 October

Another busy week in 5 Rauf, full of fantastic learning! In Art, the children have continued exploring space-themed artwork inspired by Peter Thorpe. This week, they used primary colours and sponges to create striking abstract space backgrounds. Next week, they will be adding planets using oil pastels and chalk. In Science, we investigated the concept of day and night. To support our understanding, the children made their own models using foam balls and cocktail sticks to represent the Earth on its axis, with a torch as the Sun. As they rotated their Earth models, they could clearly see how one half was in sunlight (daytime) while the other half was  in darkness (night-time).

Friday 26 September

In 5 Rauf this week, we have been busy exploring and developing our understanding of place value in Maths, with a focus on rounding skills. In science, we have been learning about the Moon’s movement and the different phases within a lunar month. We created detailed diagrams and descriptions to show this. In English, we have been exploring the features of descriptive writing. During one lesson, we focused on precise vocabulary for which we used a thesaurus to help us improve a sentence by selecting more effective vocabulary.

Friday 19 September

This week in 5 Rauf, we have continued exploring the inspiring book The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. The children have been applying everything they have learnt so far to create their own fantastic newspaper reports about this incredible event. In Geography, we have been using atlases to investigate where power stations are located across the UK. We also learnt about the different types of power stations and how they provide energy for the country. During computing, the children worked in pairs and small groups to explore systems and networks. They sorted events according to where they happened within the network system. It was wonderful to see such excellent teamwork and communication skills. It has been a great week of learning – well done 5 Rauf!

Friday 12 September

It has been wonderful to return to school and begin our journey in Year 5. We have all enjoyed getting to know our new routines and expectations, and we are already busy with some amazing learning! In English, we have been exploring the book, The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. To help us step into character and imagine what it might have been like, we tried “walking the tightrope” in class! We have enjoyed PE lessons and have started both our hockey and dance units. Within dance this week we focused on different transitions, practising the cannon technique, we were working really hard to stay in time with the music. For our warm-up, we played a fast-paced game of knee tag, where we showed great agility, coordination and balance.

Friday 18th July

This week we have been completing a fun maths project to practise calculating area and perimeter. The children had to design a tiny house, deciding which furniture, decor and appliances they would like and place them in their floor and wall plans. The next step is to turn their plan into a 3D model.

Friday 11th July

Create Day finally came! We explored the rights of the child through dancing and singing. It was fun to express ourselves together. We also created some wonderful Create Day pictures to remind us all of our rights and send out messages of hope to all.

Friday 4th July

The Time Walk was a fantastic event where the children could hear and read about music throughout time. So many of the songs they knew and would either dance or sing-a-long to. Our class focus was the 70s and the children got thoroughly involved in the events, fashion and music of that era, showing their enthusiasm through dressing up, researching events and creating a music play list. A fantastic fun day.

Friday 27th June

After an incredible sports week last week, we just wanted to share some amazing photos from our Key Stage 2 sports day. Each child took part in 2 or more races in the afternoon and had a lot of fun with a carousel of activities in the morning. A lot of fun was had by all.

Friday 20th June

This week we have been preparing for Create day on the 8th July. We are exploring the Rights of the Child through learning the song ‘The Hope’ along with the National Royal Opera and Ballet. We had two sessions of dance, exploring the right to play and the right to their own identity. We then explored the use of props and how these can inform our performance. We considered what happens when rights are denied or protected and how this makes us feel. We have now begun to learn the song ‘The Hope’ by Ayanna Witter-Johnson and have enjoyed conducting songs and learning the chorus.

Friday 13th June

The children had a fantastic trip this week to West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village. They had the chance to explore reconstructions of buildings, handle replica objects and study archaeological findings from the site to consolidate their understanding further of what life would have been like as an Anglo-Saxon.

Friday 6th June

This week in Maths, the children have been studying symmetry. They began by identifying the differences between a mirror image and its original form. They then recalled what symmetry was and began to look at vertical, horizontal and diagonal reflections. Mirrors were used to help the children find the mirror image. They even began to draw a mirror image of a half-drawn shape as you can see in the pictures.

Friday 23rd May

This week the children had a visitor from our school’s road safety expert. She discussed the importance of being aware of the rules, hazards and dangers of the roads. The children then went for a walk to practise crossing the road, encouraging the children to listen for cars, spot hazards and recognise safe places to cross.

Friday 16th May

We have been learning about the religion of Hinduism this half-term. Today we looked at different images showing rituals and celebrations that take place during Diwali, and the children made a mind map of their thoughts and questions. We then watched a video about the story of Rama and Sita, which is a story about good triumphing over bad and light winning over darkness, and is the reason for Diwali. I then read through the story, pausing at different points for the children to create freeze frames reflecting each part of the story.

Friday 9th May

This term in Art class we are studying landscape art. We looked into the work of Alfred Heaton-Cooper in the first week, studying the techniques he used. This week we created a perspective in our art considering the use of a vanishing point – the point at which two lines appear to merge together.  This is often used to suggest that it is as far as the eye can see clearly, thus creating the idea of distance. The children followed the instructions beautifully and the results were fabulous despite a very hot afternoon, as you can see.

Friday 2nd May

This term Mr Watts’ PE focus is cricket skills. This week he focused on fielding skills, developing the children’s throwing and catching. The children also practised the speed and accuracy of their passing. They discussed the different types of throws, focusing mainly on underarm throwing. All are doing really well despite the hot weather.
