Wednesday 4th June

This week in Maths, the children have been studying symmetry. They began by identifying the differences between a mirror image and its original form. They then recalled what symmetry was and began to look at vertical, horizontal and diagonal reflections. Mirrors were used to help the children find the mirror image. They even began to draw a mirror image of a half-drawn shape as you can see in the pictures.

This week the children had a visitor from our school’s road safety expert. She discussed the importance of being aware of the rules, hazards and dangers of the roads. The children then went for a walk to practise crossing the road, encouraging the children to listen for cars, spot hazards and recognise safe places to cross.

Friday 16th May

We have been learning about the religion of Hinduism this half-term. Today we looked at different images showing rituals and celebrations that take place during Diwali, and the children made a mind map of their thoughts and questions. We then watched a video about the story of Rama and Sita, which is a story about good triumphing over bad and light winning over darkness, and is the reason for Diwali. I then read through the story, pausing at different points for the children to create freeze frames reflecting each part of the story.

This term in Art class we are studying landscape art. We looked into the work of Alfred Heaton-Cooper in the first week, studying the techniques he used. This week we created a perspective in our art considering the use of a vanishing point – the point at which two lines appear to merge together.  This is often used to suggest that it is as far as the eye can see clearly, thus creating the idea of distance. The children followed the instructions beautifully and the results were fabulous despite a very hot afternoon, as you can see.

Friday 2nd May

This term Mr Watts’ PE focus is cricket skills. This week he focused on fielding skills, developing the children’s throwing and catching. The children also practised the speed and accuracy of their passing. They discussed the different types of throws, focusing mainly on underarm throwing. All are doing really well despite the hot weather.
