Friday 27th June 2025

This week we have been continuing to read and re-tell the story of Cinderella.  We looked at some of the different versions that have appeared, compared them and talked about why we call it a 'Traditional Tale.'  We also re-enacted the story, writing speech bubbles of what we thought the characters were saying to each other. Now we are starting to think about how we can change parts of the story to create our own version of this book.  We have looked at the setting that Cinderella gets invited to and who could help her.  We came up with lots of ideas and then chose our favourites, making a storyboard for our new stories.  We can't wait to write them and show them off to everyone!

Friday 20th June

This week has been such lovely weather, we have been able to get outside a lot more for our learning.  We took advantage of the sunshine to do some outside science and pretend to be zoologists.  First we learnt how zoologists look for different evidence about animals, such as footprints in soil or grass, their homes e.g. dens or nests, the food they eat and feathers or fur from the animal.  We remembered that we had already learnt about Jane Goodall and her work with chimpanzees.  Then we looked at how we could tell an animal from the size and shape of its footprint.  We went outside on a hunt and found lots of footprints all over the Astro!  The children really enjoyed finding the different prints, measuring them and recording what they looked like.  We then identified which animal they belonged to using our comparison skills.   We were surprised to find out the crow prints are almost as big as hedgehog prints!

This week we have been enjoying the drier weather in forest school and spent our time doing different activities in the forest school area.  It's an experience that the children love and look forward to each week.  Inside the classroom, we have started to learn about money, looking at coins and counting different amounts with coins. In English, we have been writing about our experiences in year 1 and reviewing our year.  Our Science has had us working to identify birds and researching facts about the different birds that feature in the story 'The Oak Tree' by Julia Donaldson.

This week has been a short but jam-packed week, full of hands-on learning for Blake class.  We have been looking for answers to questions in Science.  This week the question was 'Do taller trees have wider trunks?'  We investigated by measuring the trees in school and our answer was definitely yes!  In Maths, we have been looking at numbers up to 100 and comparing them with greater than, less than and equal to, and in English we have been working on our grammar and using suffixes and prefixes.

This week we have been working hard on our class assembly, improving our performing skills and our confidence.  We have also been for a walk to Grymes Dyke, where we used our science knowledge to identify tree species and wild flowers.  The children were surprised at how many different trees they found!  We have also spent this week working on writing similes in preparation for writing poems about springtime.

This week we have been working hard on our skills in PE.  We have been working with the coaches from SCS to develop our cricket skills, throwing and hitting the ball and running between the stumps. When we haven't been doing cricket, we have been practising our throwing skills with Mrs Banes and Miss King.  We learnt how to position ourselves so that we could throw as far as possible and some of us were very surprised at how much further we could throw!

Friday 9th May

This week we have been watching our beans closely, discovering what happens to the ones with and without water.  We have started reading a new story in English and spent time sequencing the story so that we can rewrite it next week.  In Maths, we have practised our counting in jumps of 2, 5 and 10 as we start to count in groups before learning to multiply.  We have also spent time making close observations and drawings of plants in our Art lessons.  We have learnt how Botanical Artists use a combination of science and drawing skills to carefully draw and annotate images of plants for others to learn from.

This week we have been planting seeds in our class.  We have written instructions to guide others using imperative (bossy) verbs and time conjunctions.  We have watched the growth of our bean seeds and can see them already sprouting roots!  The children showed their knowledge of plants by searching for plants around the school grounds and sorting them as garden or wild flowers.   We have also been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s to speed up our counting and are practising every day.
